Great Beer. Great Outdoors.
Part of what makes Red Wing so great is the fantastic beer, cider and wine selection you will find in the South Street Beer Garden. We are thrilled to have South Street Brewery stocking our beer garden this summer! South Street is Charlottesville’s longest-running brewery and pub. It was purchased in 2014 by Blue Mountain Brewery, whose owners have a deep connection with this storied brewing establishment and Red Wing. The company is committed to maintaining and revitalizing this important Charlottesville landmark and gathering place. Below is a sample of some of the brews they will be pouring.
Fire in the Sky: A beer made specially for Red Wing Roots Festival III, our take on a pale South-German-style festival lager pulls its name from the title song of the latest album from The Steel Wheels, “Leave Some Things Behind.” In an effort to celebrate all things Virginia, we’ve used Endeavor barley grown and malted in Nelson County Virginia along with honey from the Virginia company “Bubba’s Sweet Nectar.” Light, smooth and delicious, this cold-aged beer weighs in at 19 IBUs and 5.5% alcohol by volume.
365 Lemon Shandy: Anyone who’s been to the last two RWR fests knows one thing for sure: it gets pretty damn hot out there. There’s no better summer-time slugger than a good craft beer blended with good lemonade. We use Fair Trade “Maine Root” lemonade added to a Cascade-hop-accented ale to create the ultimate beat-the-heat brew for Red Wing Roots III. A sessionable 5.0% alcohol by volume and a mild 12 IBUs.
Bar Hopper IPA: South Street’s signature IPA is the best IPA in Virginia, and possibly the universe. There, we said it. The horn has been blown. A west-coast-style, balanced-bitter, high hop flavor and aroma pale India Pale Ale with Pacific Northwest and Southern Hemisphere hops. 6.8% alcohol by volume and 60 IBUs.
Other South Street brews you will find at Red Wing III include: Virginia Lager (Amber Lager), Satan’s Pony (Amber Ale) & Anastasia’s Chocolate Fantasy (Russian Imperial Stout).
Beer not your preference? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!
We are excited to have Old Hill Hard Cider join us in the beer garden again this year! Based in Timberville, Old Hill Cider is the Shenandoah Valley’s first such cidery. Using carefully selected apples of heirloom cider-specific varieties, their artisan hard cider is made from 100% apple juice. The added benefit of hard cider being gluten-free is attracting new fans as well.
New to the beer garden this year is Rosemont Vineyards & Winery. Rosemont produces all different styles of wine, from the classic Bordeaux varietals to dry, crisp whites and sweet wines. Being involved in every aspect of winemaking, from budbreak to harvest and bottling, allows them to produce wines of the greatest quality that showcase this great Virginia terroir.
Proceeds of the South Street Beer Garden benefit WNRN.
